The 1938 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the 33rd edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. 21 teams entered the Europe Zone, while 4 entered the Americas Zone.

Australia defeated Japan in the Americas Zone final, while in the Europe Zone final Germany defeated Yugoslavia. Australia defeated Germany in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but were defeated in the Challenge Round by defending champions the United States. The final was played at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States on 3–5 September.[1][2][3]

1 Rot-Weiss Tennis Club
The Lawn Tennis Turnier Club Rot-Weiß is a tennis club located in Grunewald, part of a district in Berlin, Germany. The club was founded in 1897 as Lawn Tennis Turnier Club, and was the origin for careers of many German tennis players in the 20th century like Cilly Aussem, Otto Froitzheim, Henner Henkel, Hans Moldenhauer, Hans-Jürgen Pohmann, Roman Najuch und Daniel Prenn. The central court has been the venue of the German Pro Championships since 1911 and later the German Open WTA Tour tournament from 1979 until 2008. The club has 16 clay courts. During winter season there are eight indoor courts available. A larger 7,000-seat stadium court was built in 1996 to replace the old one with 3,500. This stadium was named Steffi Graf Stadion in September 2004. Steffi Graf was member of the club since 1984. Also Boris Becker represented the club 1985-1987. The club is located at the Gottfried von Cramm Street, named after the German tennis legend and the man primarily responsible for reviving the Rot-Weiß club after World War II, Baron Gottfried von Cramm.More

Robert Larimore Riggs was an American tennis champion who was the World No. 1 or the World co-No. 1 player for three years, first as an amateur in 1939, then as a professional in 1946 and 1947. He played his first professional tennis match on December 26, 1941.More

John Donald Budge was an American tennis player. He is most famous as the first player — of any nationality, male or female, and still the only American male — to win the four tournaments that comprise the Grand Slam of tennis in a single year. Budge was the second male player to win all four Grand Slam events in his career after Fred Perry, and is still the youngest to achieve that feat. He won ten majors, of which six were Grand Slam events and four Pro Slams, the latter achieved on three different surfaces. Budge was considered to have the best backhand in the history of tennis, at least until the emergence of Ken Rosewall in the 1950s and 1960s, although most observers rated Budge's backhand the stronger of the two.
